Times of crisis always brings out the best of one. This time we have to balance between taking care of ourselves and family and the nation as a whole. Since we are able to go to the markets, what you stock up on should only be good for 5 to 7 days. Canned goods are only second or third on the list because honestly, we should still think healthy living.
What I have stocked up on are eggs, milk (powdered or boxed), butter, cheese, and flour. On the meats side, I first think of what I can cook that would last a few days. So I think Adobo, Sinigang, Kaldereta, and dishes using beans. There’s also Paksiw because that can last without refrigeration and taste good even the next days.
Because I know how to make bread, I have bread and all-purpose flour and started making bread for the family. Maybe you can try your hand at this; there are quick bread recipes on the internet; try those as they only use all-purpose flour.
All-purpose flour can also be turned into pasta and pizza; so give those a try.
Eggs are also marvelous; before you go to the supermarket or market, take a look at the different kinds of omelets and egg dishes. They are easy to do and make a list of the ingredients needed so that you don’t waste too much ingredients by taking a guess.
Think too of things that are easy to prepare; just like pasta salads and spaghetti dishes; popular with the kids and easy to make. Being in the house quarantined, one gets hungry all the time, so think of sandwich fillings: chicken, egg, cheese, peanut butter, spreads, and jams.
Being under house quarantine should also bring out the creativity in us; give yourself the license to be fantastic!
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay at home.
Love,
Tita Meg
